What should you use to translate Portuguese for Portugal?

For a written message, DeepL is worth checking for its separate Portuguese output options. For an explicit Portugal country choice in a spoken exchange, Spek offers one. Apple and Google are also useful options, but check which regional setting applies to your task.

Before choosing a European Portuguese translator, decide what you need to do:

A language selector, a microphone setting, and a speaker voice can control different parts of the process. Finding “Portugal” in one setting does not establish what happens in all the others. Likewise, a Brazil label alone does not demonstrate that a translation will be incomprehensible in Portugal.

Spek is our app. This guide explains documented choices and limitations; it does not establish which service translates European Portuguese most accurately.

DeepL: check the output variety for written messages

DeepL’s language guidance makes an important distinction: Portuguese input is not separated by variety, while its output options distinguish Portuguese from Portuguese (Brazilian). It defines the first output option as covering Portuguese varieties other than Brazilian Portuguese. That is broader than a Portugal-only label.

Its iPhone listing also names both Portuguese options. When writing for Portugal, look for the non-Brazilian Portuguese choice in the target-language options. Check the labels in your installed version; this guide has not independently tested the current iPhone picker.

For a message about a reservation, enter a complete request with its date, time, and number of people. Review those details in the result before copying it into the original message. Choosing a variety helps express your preference; it cannot certify that every sentence has the right tone for its recipient.

DeepL also supports mobile dictation. Its help explains that dictation uses the device’s speech recognition and that supported languages depend on the device. This is a separate check from the language chosen for translated text. The listing includes text-to-speech, but we have not verified a European Portuguese playback voice in the iPhone app.

Use it for: translating a written passage while checking the output variety. DeepL is free to download with in-app purchases, and some features require a paid plan. Review the current listing before paying for a particular feature.

Google and Apple: check speech and built-in options

Google Translate: wording and playback need separate checks

For text, open Google Translate, set the source and target languages, and enter a complete sentence. Google’s iPhone text guide documents Listen for playback and Settings → Speech region for accent settings.

Its speech guide also documents Profile → Settings → Speech region, with regional choices available for some languages. Check the Portuguese choices your version offers. Those instructions do not establish that selecting an audio region changes every word in the translated text to Portuguese for Portugal.

For a short spoken phrase, select the languages, tap Dictation, and speak after the tone. Look at what the app recognized before judging its translation. A place name or number can be wrong at the recognition stage.

Use it for: a general text, speech, or image task when its available controls and result meet your needs. Test the specific Portuguese input and playback you plan to use.

Apple Translate: useful when its available Portuguese option fits

Apple’s current Translate App availability list names Portuguese (Brazil). It does not separately list Portuguese (Portugal) in that section. This describes the supported label; it is not a test of whether Apple can understand someone from Portugal.

Open Translate, choose the languages, then type a phrase or tap Listen to speak. Apple’s instructions cover reviewing and playing the result, as well as language downloads.

Use it for: a quick phrase when the available option gives you what you need. If you specifically need a documented non-Brazilian output choice, check DeepL or a tool with a Portugal selector before settling on an app.

Spek: select Portugal for a spoken exchange

Spek lists Portugal / Portuguese (European) separately from Brazil / Portuguese (Brazilian). Both sit within its wider set of country-specific language and dialect choices.

To request a translation into Portuguese for Portugal:

  1. Open Spek’s voice screen and tap the language header.
  2. Choose the language you will speak as the source and Portugal / Portuguese (European) as the target.
  3. Hold the microphone while speaking, then release it to request the translation.
  4. Review the recognized words and the translated result.
  5. Swap the languages when you want to understand the other person’s reply.

Spek’s country selection requests that regional variety. It does not replace checking names, numbers, or whether the result suits the situation. No accuracy advantage over the other apps has been measured for this guide.

Use it for: an explicit Portugal selection with deliberate spoken turns, or a separate photo translation task. Spek needs internet and offers in-app purchases; check its App Store listing for current details.

Reading photos and preparing for a weak connection

When you are reading Portuguese into English, start with a clear image and the correct language direction. An English output does not need a Portuguese playback accent.

DeepL’s image guide documents selecting the languages, tapping the Image button under the source field on iOS, and importing a picture. Google documents Camera → Gallery for saved images in its iPhone image guide. In Spek, open Image Translation, set the languages, and use Select Image → Photo Library → Translate Image.

Our screenshot translation guide includes Apple’s built-in Photos route and fixes for unreadable text. For a restaurant visit, follow the iPhone menu guide instead of photographing every dish separately.

Before travelling, test the exact task without mobile data. Apple documents language downloads, and Google documents downloadable languages for offline camera translation where available. These are feature-specific options: a downloaded language does not promise every voice or image mode works offline. Spek requires an internet connection.

Check one real task before choosing an app

Try a short, non-private message you actually need, such as asking a host about check-in. Keep the same input and translation direction across the apps you compare.

  1. Check the intended meaning. Does the message ask a question, make a request, or confirm a plan? Keep that purpose explicit in the input.
  2. Check details against the original. Confirm dates, times, addresses, prices, and names rather than relying on how fluent the result looks.
  3. Check regional wording with a fluent speaker when it matters. Ask whether it sounds appropriate for someone in Portugal and for the relationship involved.
  4. Check audio separately. If you plan to play the message aloud, listen to the actual voice available in your app. A text variety and a playback voice need not be the same setting.

Back-translating a result can expose some mistakes, but it cannot prove that the Portuguese sounds natural. If a recipient requires a certified translation, confirm their requirements and use a suitably qualified translator.

Common questions

Does DeepL offer European Portuguese?

DeepL documents a non-Brazilian Portuguese output option alongside Portuguese (Brazilian). Its definition covers varieties beyond Portugal, so do not read the label as a guarantee of Portugal-only wording or a particular iPhone playback accent.

Can I use Apple Translate in Portugal?

Apple lists Portuguese (Brazil) in its Translate app language availability. Try it for your task if that option suits your needs; the label alone is not evidence that it cannot handle a conversation in Portugal.

Is a Portugal voice setting enough for European Portuguese text?

Check both. A speech-region setting concerns audio, while the translated text has its own output-language choice. Confirm which setting your app exposes for the method you use.

What is the best European Portuguese translator for iPhone?

Choose by task: check DeepL’s documented varieties for written messages, Apple or Google for a quick supported task, and Spek for an explicit Portugal selection. This documentation-based guide cannot name an overall accuracy winner.
