The quickest way to translate a saved screenshot
Open the screenshot in Photos, tap the Live Text button, then tap Translate. On a supported iPhone and language, that may be all you need. If the option is missing, try importing the image into Apple Translate, Google Translate, or Spek.
A screenshot is useful when the words are trapped inside an image: a booking notice, a delivery update, or a screen sent by someone else. If the original app already lets you select the words, copying the text into a translator can save you a step.
Start with a screenshot saved as an image in Photos. On an iPhone with Face ID, press and quickly release the side and volume-up buttons together. On an iPhone with a Home button, use Home and the side button. Save the capture to Photos; Apple’s screenshot guide covers the controls. For a long page, capture a readable paragraph at a time rather than shrinking the whole page into one image.
If you are pointing your camera at a restaurant menu, our menu translation guide covers that separate task.
1. Try Photos and Live Text first
Apple’s Live Text instructions provide this built-in route:
- Open Photos and select the screenshot.
- Tap the Live Text button to make recognized text available.
- Tap Translate. If prompted, tap Continue and choose the language you want, or use Change Language.
Live Text needs an iPhone XS, iPhone XR, or later with iOS 15 or later. If it is turned off, go to Settings → General → Language & Region → Live Text.
Recognizing letters and translating their meaning are separate capabilities. Seeing selectable text does not guarantee that your required translation language is available. Check Apple’s current language lists if a particular script or language fails.
If Photos gives you a useful result, you can finish without installing another app. If it does not, keep the original screenshot and try a different import path below.
2. Open the screenshot in Apple Translate
Apple’s Translate app has a Photo Library route as well as its camera view. That makes it useful when you want to select the image and languages inside a dedicated translation app.
- Open Translate on your iPhone.
- Tap Camera, then the Photo Library button.
- Choose the screenshot that contains the text.
- Tap a language to change it if needed. Use the Share button if you want to save or share the translated image.
These controls follow Apple’s photo translation guide. Importing a screenshot does not require photographing your phone with another device.
Apple also documents language downloads for offline translation. Before relying on that during a trip, download both languages and test the exact saved-image task in airplane mode. Do not assume that every feature or language pair has the same offline support.
3. Use Google Translate’s Gallery import
Google Translate provides another saved-image workflow if Apple’s available languages or result do not suit the task.
- Open Google Translate on your iPhone.
- Choose the source and target languages; use Detect language if appropriate.
- Tap Camera, then Gallery, and select the saved screenshot.
- Review the translation. Check that it uses the correct language direction.
Google’s iPhone image guide documents Gallery import and warns that small, unclear, or decorative lettering can affect translation. It also explains how to download available languages for offline camera translation. Test your saved-image workflow before depending on it without a connection.
4. Import the screenshot into Spek
Spek offers a separate photo translation screen with source and target language choices. It is one option when you want image translation alongside its voice and country-specific language tools. Spek is our app, and it requires an internet connection and offers in-app purchases.
- Open Image Translation in Spek.
- Set the language in the screenshot as the source and the language you want to read as the target. Choose different source and target languages.
- Tap Select Image → Photo Library, then choose your screenshot.
- Check that the image preview includes the complete passage you need.
- Tap Translate Image and review the result. The screen shows Analyzing… while it waits.
The imported image is sent to Spek’s translation service when you request translation. Choose a screenshot you are comfortable submitting. Spek’s documented workflow imports a saved image; it does not automatically translate the contents of another running app.
For a country or dialect choice, see how Spek’s language options work and check the current App Store listing before deciding whether you need an additional app.
What to check when screenshot translation fails
Work out where the problem begins before switching tools repeatedly.
There is no Live Text or Translate control. Check the device, Live Text setting, and supported languages above. Then try opening the saved image inside Apple Translate or Google Translate. A missing Photos control alone does not tell you whether another app can process that image.
The translator picks the wrong language. A screen may mix the app’s English controls with a message in another language. Select the message’s language manually. Crop out unrelated navigation, while keeping the full sentence or paragraph that gives the message context.
The words are too small or incomplete. Return to the original screen, enlarge the content if possible, and capture a shorter section. Cropping a tiny, blurry image cannot restore letters that were never legible. Keep a copy of the original so you can check whether a line was cut off.
A long screenshot will not import. Check whether you saved a full-page capture as a PDF in Files. The image-import steps in this guide expect a photo or screenshot image. Return to the page and save ordinary screen captures to Photos, one readable section at a time.
The result reads smoothly but changes a detail. Compare dates, prices, addresses, names, and any words expressing a condition or negation with the original. For a booking, for example, check whether a time refers to arrival or departure. A fluent sentence can still answer the wrong question.
You are trying without internet. A saved screenshot is available offline, but the translation tool may still need a connection. Test an app’s downloaded-language mode for your exact task. Spek needs internet even when the image is already on your phone.
Common questions
Can I translate a screenshot without downloading an app?
Try Photos and Live Text first. If the device and languages are supported, you may already have what you need. Apple Translate is another option if it is installed on your phone.
Can I translate a message screenshot someone sends me?
Yes. Save the received image to Photos and use one of the import methods above. You need a readable image; you do not need access to the sender’s original app. Include enough of the message to preserve its context.
Does a screenshot translator replace the text in the original app?
These steps translate a saved capture or show a separate result. They do not change the message, booking, or interface inside the app where it originated.
Which screenshot translator is most accurate?
This guide does not establish an accuracy winner. Results depend on the image, language pair, and context. Check the specific details you need, and compare another method if a result is unclear.
